In March 2024, an article in the British Medical Journal examined potential links between certain progestins and meningioma, a type of brain tumor that is generally benign. While none of the meningiomas associated with progestin use in the study were malignant, these tumors can still pose health risks depending on their size and location, sometimes requiring surgical intervention.
Progestins, which are synthetic hormones, are commonly found in various contraceptives, including combination oral contraceptive pills and injectable forms like Depo Provera. The active ingredient in Depo Provera, medroxyprogesterone acetate, was one of the progestins linked to an increased likelihood of developing meningioma with long-term use. The study suggested that the risk of meningioma increases with both the dosage and the duration of exposure to these progestins.
If you have concerns about your use of progestins, it is essential to consult your physician rather than discontinuing medication without professional guidance. Additionally, if you have been diagnosed with a meningioma and have a history of progestin use, you may wish to seek legal counsel to discuss your options, as litigation on this issue is ongoing.
