In 1989, W. Scott Gwin made the shift from legal practice to the judiciary, getting elected as Judge of the Fifth District Court of Appeal. During his 36-year tenure, he also acted as a visiting judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio and held various leadership roles on the Court of Appeals. Beyond his responsibilities on the Court of Appeals, he contributed to the Ohio Judicial Conference Executive Committee and Continuing Legal Education Committee. Gwin also provided instruction on appellate procedure and legal ethics and held officer/board positions with the Ohio Court of Appeals Association and Advisory Committee on Court Security for the Supreme Court of Ohio for five years.
In addition to his extensive legal and judicial tenure, W. Scott Gwin has generously devoted his time to supporting the legal community throughout his career. His roles have included serving on Ohio's Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline, being appointed Master Commissioner, and contributing to various Supreme Court committees dedicated to judicial ethics, liability, and security.
